Pinyin represents Mandarin pronunciation using Latin letters and tone marks. It supports listening and speaking; it is not an English translation and does not replace learning to read Chinese characters.
One expression, three different kinds of information

The characters show the written form, pinyin helps with pronunciation and the translation explains the meaning. Decide which part you want to practise: understanding the expression, saying it or recognising its written form.
For a first attempt, listen while following the pinyin, repeat, then try saying the expression without looking.
What do the marks above the vowels mean?
Mandarin has four basic tones, as well as syllables with a neutral tone. The marks indicate tone; they are not simply stress marks.

Use the table as an introduction, then listen to tones in whole words and expressions. The MIT OpenCourseWare pinyin resource explains the system in more detail.
Familiar letters do not always mean familiar sounds
Do not automatically read pinyin as if it were English. Learn the sound correspondences with audio examples. An English approximation can be a personal reminder, but it should not replace listening.
Choose a short expression. First listen to the whole sound. On the second listen, follow the pinyin. Then repeat and compare. If one part is difficult, practise it and return to the complete expression.
A short practice for today
- Check the meaning. Decide what you are trying to say.
- Listen. Follow the pinyin as a guide.
- Repeat aloud. You do not need to rush.
- Hide the help. Try to recall the expression, then check.
Finish with two questions: did you remember the meaning, and could you say it without help? If one was harder, you have a specific task for your next session.
You can record yourself and listen back. If you have access to someone who knows Mandarin, ask them to point out one difference instead of trying to correct everything at once.
Can I start without learning to write characters?
You can focus initially on listening and speaking with audio and pinyin. Reading and writing characters are additional goals that need their own practice. Choose your focus according to what you want to do with the language.
If your goal includes reading signs, messages or longer texts, include characters too. Starting with pinyin does not mean giving up on writing later.
